This game is simply brilliant and is not well known! Huge battles with spells excellent graphics and decent story... I first played this in 2006 when game was released. Im playing it again now (2018) and love it even more! If you like fantasy in any way.... id recommend this game.... hell even if you dont ....just ...play this!. So I have logged over 40 hours on this game since i bought it a couple weeks ago. Needless to say i thoroughly enjoy this game. I found it while looking for a game similar to Warlords Battlecry 3 and it most certainly delivered and then some. As with any game ive played, i find things i like and things i dont.Some Pros:-4 very unique playable races-Massive army cap unlike any game ive ever played-Easy to control-Straightforward gameplay-Clever AISome Cons:-Very few skirmish maps-Playable races are not equal in strength, Undead and Elven are close, Mechanic and Cryo not even close-Campaign difficulty gets to the point where it is not enjoyable-Resources are difficult to obtainAll in all ive enjoyed this game and will continue to play it. I liked it more before I figured it out. Now it I cannot get throughthe first level. I don't know what that means. Was fun.. Its old But its one of the best game i have played. One of the best game ever made I am very disappointed why the cancelled the sequel it would have been amazing.. RTSes always have to be wary of plodding too much, and avoid getting into repetitive tugs of war in every match. Well, this game plods right past the idea of not plodding. Aside from the Steam Machine, which was pretty fun and reminded me of how great tanks and ambulances are in C&C games, the Dwarven side at least is mostly just about spamming riflemen and supplementing your mob with too few siege units.The bases in this game are terrible. They take far too long to destroy, making it hard to make a sudden comeback when things swing in your favor, and making it take forever to lose when you're going to. In several of the maps, they're positioned in the corners, rendering attacks other than full frontal assault impossible.The RPG mode was definitely not integrated into the game well. RTS players have scrunched up bases and rolling masses of warriors, not the sort of opponent that designers would use if they were making a pure RPG game at all. In terms of feel, it consists mostly of running backwards and shooting, rather than like Diablo, where you blitzkrieg through enemies, moving ever forward while constantly placing your cookie cutters for maximum damage, or like controlling a C&C commando, where every click could either send them to their death or destroy an opponent's structure.. What if there were modern arms in medieval, fantasy times. They created an interesting plot-hook.. but never followed through. This was, apparently, planned as a trilogy and they went bankrupt after publishing the first part.The RPG-part of this game is collecting loot and leveling up your character (one Character but 3 paths to follow: Mage, Ranger and Warrior). With every level that you advance you can choose to increase a statistic (no skill), like damage, movement speed or the likes. If you don't like the two opportunities, you can choose to wait this time but the next level up you will get a far greater range of changes. The system I liked but that's it for RPG, because the quests are all: Go and kill something for reasons! Get Coins or Loot as reward! Just clearing out the entire map is more fun because of all the hidden stuff you can find(special gear, potions that give permanent changes to statistics).At about two occassions (might even be three), you can control a second hero character. I gave her all the stuff I didn't need and never played her again after that. The RTS is like in Spellforce but only with one race and a bit more clumsy. The resources are placed sometimes a bit random but luckily, you don't have to play this to often. In my playthrough I had to build a base on maybe 4 or 5 occassions. If you are thinking about buying the game because of the story, don't do it, there is none besides the usual "Find magic artifact that saves the world" and everything else is just decoration. If you are looking for a game similar to spellforce .. buy spellforce, because this game is too limited in this regard. ___Got hooked on the story but it never evolved.
